I am reading this article on Yahoo talking about 7 items you should always buy generic.  The items include pain killers, water, milk, etc.

It certainly is a personal preference to choose brand name or generic products.  I came from a pharmaceutical company background.  Over my years working for the big pill makers, I have learned that some medicine you should definitely go with generic, but others, it makes sense to pay the extra bucks to stick with the brand name.

If grocery items and drugs are personal choice.  What about real estate?  Should you buy houses that were built by no name builders or houses that were built by well trusted companies, such as Shapell?

You probably already know the answer...It's a personal choice.  Having said that, my clients always ask me what I would do if I was in their situation.  So I am sharing my personal choice here with you.

It really depends on the budget.  All things equal, I probably will go with a brand name.  If not for anything else, it will make sense to buy it for resale value.  One of the major difference a piece of real estate is not the same as the grocery item is that you don't exactly consume it.  Instead, after years of living there, you have to face the market as a seller where you sell it to another family.  So it's not only about how much you like it, it's also about how much other people (or the market) will like it.

I keep saying to my clients, it's ok to buy older homes, as long as the homes were built by decent builders.  Hope this helps.  Until next time...
