New York Mayor Mr. Bloomberg asked the US Department of Agriculture to ban using of the food stamps for soda or other sugared drinks.  Now maybe for his political career, it's good that the Mayor can come up with ideas like this to make an effort to fight obesity.  But it makes me thinking about the purpose of the food stamps.

I didn't go back to the US Department of Agriculture's mission statement to check, but it has always been my understanding that the food stamps are for people who have some temperate or permanent financial difficulties to get the basic food and drink to survive.  It's one of the general benefits the government provide to its people.

I have a habit of giving a dollar or two to the homeless people holding the sign by the traffic lights.  One time, my daughter told me that her friend said we shouldn't give the homeless people any money.  Her reason is that the homeless people will just use the money for drink or drug.  I told my daughter that it's my job to give them the spare money but it's their job to decide how to spend it.  At the end of the day, we all have to answer to the decisions we made in life.

Come back to this proposal on the food stamps.  I can't help but feeling the same way as I feel about giving money to the homeless people.  The fact that these people are qualify for the food stamps tells me that they are in some kind of difficulties in their lives.  Aren't they suffering enough?  Do they really need us to tell them not to buy a can of soda in the hot summer day to chill out a bit?  Is obesity really on their top priority to fight?  I can't help but feeling this is not what the government should get its hands in.

I have no political bias for or against Mr. Bloomberg.  Just feel like putting my 2 cents here.  Doesn't our government micro-manage our lives enough?  Where is the line?  I am confused....
